How To Get Upstate

MeganDerek_0920_Edit.jpg

Planning your Upstate NY wedding and wondering how you are going to get all of your out of town guests here? Luckily with all of the airports, train stations, and roadways there are many travel options available across Upstate New York. Each major airport has rental car pickups available, and we now have ride sharing so Uber and Lyft are also options to add to the mix. To keep things simple we will cover all of the modes of transportation between the regions that are in our home turf – the Catskills, Capital District, and the Adirondacks. This area is marked by the presence of the Hudson River which runs north-south along the eastern part of New York State. Our train and highway system follows the path of the river so train and bus stops are all located along it. Veering off to the east or west requires the use of a car.

Catskills – You can get pretty remote if you venture far into the mountains, but the Catskills region and the northern Hudson Valley offer you and your guests several travel options. And with this region being the closest to New York City it lends itself well to being a hot spot for city couples who want to venture to the country for their wedding.

Airports: Stewart Airport in Newburgh (southeast of the park) and Albany International Airport in Albany (northeast of it)

Trains: Metro North will get you as far north as Poughkeepsie or Amtrak has stops in Poughkeepsie, Rhinecliff, and Hudson

Bus: Greyhound has many stops along I-87

Capital District (Albany/Troy/Schenectady/Saratoga Springs) – The state capital of New York is Albany which also happens to be a hub for major highways. Getting here by air, train, or road is pretty easy, and you can branch out from here by jumping on one of the interstates that cross through.

Airports: Albany International Airport is located right in the Albany area

Trains: The Albany-Rensselaer train station is just across the Hudson River from downtown Albany and Amtrak services several lines through here. There is also an Amtrak stop in Saratoga Springs and Fort Edward (near Glens Falls).

Bus: Greyhound runs full service at the Albany Bus Terminal, and there are also Greyhound stops in Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, and Glens Falls.

Adirondacks – The Adirondack Park is the largest national park in our country, which means the land is vast and mostly undeveloped and it can take quite a drive to reach where you need to go. Lake George is the biggest town at the south end of the park and Lake Placid is the biggest towards the north.

Airports: Albany International Airport is a solid hour drive from the southern border of the park but the closest airport to Lake George. Burlington Airport in Vermont is the closest for destinations in the northeast part of the Adirondack Park but requires crossing Lake Champlain by ferry (seasonal operation on some lines)

Trains: Amtrak service hugs the New York/Vermont border as it goes north with stops in Whitehall, Ticonderoga, Port Henry, Westport, Port Kent, and Plattsburgh.

Bus: Greyhound has stops along 87 North (The Northway) and into towns like Lake Placid.
