Today Governor Cuomo signed into Executive Order that city and county clerks in New York State are allowed to issue marriage licenses online, and that wedding ceremonies can take place virtually instead of in-person. The original state marriage laws still apply, and the officiant needs to meet the criteria for performing a legal ceremony, but now the in-person aspects are no longer part of the criteria. Amazing!! This opens up a huge window for people who are living in towns where their clerk’s office is closed due to the coronavirus and they can’t go in to apply for a marriage license. Equally, this opens up the opportunity for couples who want to be married now (the party can come later!) and just need the legal process available to make it realized for them. For those couples their witnesses can watch via video instead of having to be standing right next to them when they say I Do.
Please note – The New York State website has not been updated with this information at the time of this posting. We will continue to monitor updates and will post them here should any additional information need to be shared.
If you didn’t already know, all of WPP’s wedding planners are ordained and can perform legal ceremonies in person or online (yay yay!). If you are interested in performing your ceremony online with us at this time just send us an inquiry and we can take care of the rest.
Happy Wedding Day to all couples who can make it official – pandemic or bust!
