THE JOURNAL

Engaged, Now What?

Crack open the champagne 🥂—cue the happy tears, hugs, and congratulations from friends and family!

The first moments after getting engaged are a whirlwind: excited phone calls, screenshots of the ring being sent to group chats, and a stomach full of butterflies. But once the confetti settles and the initial excitement fades just a bit, you may find yourselves looking at each other and asking… “Okay—now what?”

The beginning of the wedding planning process doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. There are a few foundational conversations to have early on that will make the rest of your planning journey far smoother. The order doesn’t matter as much as making sure you cover these essentials.

Talk Timeline- When do you want to get married?
Start by thinking about the season that speaks to you as a couple. Do you envision a spring wedding filled with fresh beginnings? A summer celebration for two people who love the outdoors? A fall wedding surrounded by Upstate’s breathtaking foliage? Or maybe you want to turn your winter engagement into a cozy, magical winter wedding.

Once you’ve landed on a season, talk through timing realistically. If your dream season is quickly approaching, a longer engagement may give you more flexibility—and far less stress—to bring your vision to life.

Discuss Your Vision-This is the fun part!
What do you actually picture when you think about your wedding day? City or country? Barn or ballroom? Intimate microwedding or full guest list? One perfect day or an entire wedding weekend?

This is the moment to dream together and see where your ideas overlap. You don’t need every detail figured out yet—just a general direction. Having a shared vision will make choosing venues and vendors much easier down the road.

Determine a Budget
Before you book anything, you need to know what you’re working with.

Whether you’re funding the wedding yourselves, receiving help from family, or a mix of both, setting clear financial boundaries early on is essential. A well-defined budget allows you to make informed decisions and prioritize what matters most to you. Plan before you purchase—it’ll save you stress (and money) later.

Draft Your Guest List
Who do you want by your side on your big day?

Your guest count impacts nearly every aspect of your wedding, from venue options to catering, rentals, florals, stationery, favors, and transportation. More guests = higher costs.

Knowing your approximate number early can help you avoid falling in love with a venue that can’t accommodate your list—or your budget. If tough decisions need to be made (no kids, no plus-ones, or trimming extended lists), it’s always easier to have those conversations sooner rather than later.

Hire a Wedding Planner
You didn’t think I’d leave this off the list, did you?

If you’re newly engaged and already feeling overwhelmed, a professional wedding planner can be a game-changer. From building a realistic budget and sourcing the perfect venues and vendors, to managing logistics and keeping everything on track, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Most couples want to actually enjoy their engagement—and keep relationships (including with future in-laws 😉) peaceful. A planner helps eliminate the noise, focus your priorities, and ensure your wedding day comes together seamlessly… all while keeping those dreaded bridezilla moments at bay.

Congratulations again on your engagement, and best of luck as you begin this exciting (and sometimes wild) wedding planning journey. We’re always here—whether you’re interested in working with us or simply stopping by here for helpful planning advice.

Xoxo,
Shannon
